Let’s discuss the difference between fearlessness and courage.
I like to practice courage instead of fearlessness. In fact, I’m not sure it’s possible to be fearless.
Why?
Fear is a constant companion in life. It’s part of the human experience.
So, instead of abolishing or denying fear, we should recognize, befriend and honor it for what it is: something that is trying to keep us safe and out of harm’s way.
The difference between being courageous as opposed to fearless is that courage acknowledges the fear and takes action anyway.
Part of finding the courage to do something comes from letting go of limiting beliefs.
Our belief system gets created when we’re little. When we are born, we are perfectly authentic in who we are. However, as we grow up, society starts to condition — and even indoctrinate — us by telling us what is expected and considered normal.
When we are harshly disciplined or criticized, we start to believe we can’t trust our innate wisdom of who we are and how to express ourselves.
Before puberty, we have very little access to our still-developing pre-frontal cortex. As such, it is difficult for us to take another person’s perspective and understand that they are projecting their inner pain onto us. Consequently, we begin to believe that their negative energy and behavior results because of us and that there must be something wrong with us. That we are not good enough in some or many ways. We created beliefs around these negative childhood situations and these beliefs end up running our future behaviors without us even realizing it.
Our primary belief system is created in childhood, so I help my clients identify these limiting beliefs through inner-child or younger-self work. Check out this blog post for more details on what inner-child work entails.
Courage is key to living an authentic life.
It helps us recognize what holds us back and then teaches us the rewards of pushing through those limitations. Practicing courage helps us become better, bolder humans overall by empowering us to become the highest versions of ourselves.
